Harry Potter movies ranked

Harry Potter is back in the news again. This time, it’s being reported that a deal for an HBO series based on the Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling is in the works. While we’ve seen these reports every now and then, it feels a little more real this time.

We also thought it’d be a good time to rank the Harry Potter movies from worst to best before we get more Potter stories added into the mix. So far, there have been eight Harry Potter movies based on the book series. There have also been three Fantastic Beasts movies with even more in the works.

Here’s the list of the Harry Potter movies in order:

  • Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
  • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
  • Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
  • Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
  • Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
  • Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2

Let’s get the list of the Harry Potter movies ranked with the worst movie of the franchise, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1.

8. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1

  • Release Year: 2010
  • Director: David Yates
  • Cast: Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Helena Bonham Carter, Robbie Coltrane, Warwick Davis, Ralph Fiennes, Michael Gambon, Brendan Gleeson, Richard Griffiths, John Hurt, Jason Isaacs, Alan Rickman, Fiona Shaw, Timothy Spall, Imelda Staunton, David Thewlis, and Julie Walters

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 isn’t a bad movie, but there’s not a lot going on compared to the other movies. Each of those has a beginning, middle, and end. There’s a clear resolution and something that moves the story forward. The Deathly Hallows Part 1 basically only moved the story forward and ends right in the middle of the action, very sad action.

In the movie, Harry, Ron, and Hermione embark on their epic quest to find Voldemort’s horcruxes. They ditch senior year (Year 7) at Hogwarts to do what Dumbledore told Harry needed to be done in order to defeat Voldemort.

While this part of the story is not bad in the book and there’s actually a lot of action in the movie, it’s just not a complete story, which was always going to be the risk when they decided to split the seventh and final book into two parts. It’s like if they ended The Return of the King right when Frodo and Sam got to Mordor in The Lord of the Rings. In addition, I think there are a lot of moments in both of the Deathly Hallows movies that could have been cut and turned into one movie. It’s very similar to The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 and Part 2. There’s really no reason to do it other than double the profits.

Up next is Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets!
