Marvel Studios cutting back on the amount of projects per year will help more than just their own company.

The phrase, “Distance makes the heart grow fonder” is sometimes right. People getting used to something brings a certain amount of expectations. Those expectations can breed dissatisfaction. In this case, we have Marvel Studios. A company that some are saying overdoes it with the amount of projects they currently produce.

For years, the studio has put out a lot of content in a year. The debut of Disney Plus upped that. In 2022, Disney Plus released Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Werewolf by Night, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. That’s on top of the theatrical releases of Marvel Cinematic Universe movies Black Panther: Wakanda ForeverThor: Love and Thunder, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. That’s nine MCU projects in a year. A lot by anyone’s standards. Maybe too many.

Less is more for Marvel

The amount of movies and shows in Phase Four caused various kinds of criticism. Is the market becoming oversaturated? Are the amount of comic book projects ruining movies, television, and streaming platforms? Regardless of where you fall on these questions, these are queries that could become concerning. Because of that, as reported by The Direct, Marvel Studios could be reducing the amount of movies and shows starting this year.

This is something that President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige also spoke about recently, telling Entertainment Weekly:

"“I do think one of the powerful aspects of being at Marvel Studios is having these films and shows hit the zeitgeist. It is harder to hit the zeitgeist when there’s so much product out there — and so much ‘content,’ as they say, which is a word that I hate.”"

This is a smart move by Marvel Studio. While this writer watches all of their movies, there is such a thing as too much. When fans can only expect around four projects a year, there’s more excitement. It’s like eating a meal you like on a regular basis. You’ll still enjoy the meal, but eventually you’ll get tired of it. This is why moderation is key to enjoying things.

The biggest thing this move will do is bring back the excitement for Marvel movies and shows. Fans will now remember what it was like to wonder how long until they saw their favorite heroes and villains again. More importantly, this will avoid the “superhero movie fatigue” that’s become a narrative.
