Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin video game in the works
By Mark Lynch
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin being adapted as a video game will continue the trend of story driven video games.
There has been a market for older heroes coming out of retirement for one more battle for years now. Before Marvel Comics created the Wasteland universe (Old Man Logan, Old Man Hawkeye, etc), there was Batman: The Dark Knight Returns and Kingdom Come. In 2020, IDW Publishing jumped into the game with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin.
This was a story in which Michelangelo was the last living member of his family. The only other survivor was April O’Neil. Meanwhile, Oroku Hiroto (Karai’s son and Shredder’s grandson) has taken over New York. This brings Michelangelo back to New York to get his revenge.
The series was incredibly popular thanks to the original writers of the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic books. They brought back the darker tone to the series and created a classic. Normally, a mini-series that gets praise from comic book fans is adapted as an animated series or a movie. The Last Ronin became the exception. According to IGN, the comic book is becoming a video game. IGN reports that a “mystery developer” is creating the game. Whoever could be putting together a classic.
Games like The Last of Us, Ghost of Tsushima, and God of War have proven that stories can help drive a game. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin is one of the best comic book stories of the last 20 years. Of course there will be alterations to the story to fit the game. Some moments won’t work on a video game platform. However, there isn’t much that should be changed. It’s close to perfect the way it is.
There will always be a market for TMNT video games. Recently, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge went out on multiple platforms. The game had a retro style, but fans still went out and bought it. The Last Ronin will change the way TMNT games are played. Instead of a multiple player game with each turtle having different weapons and skill sets, it’ll likely be one character doing it all.
Switching between equipment can be fun if the platform makes the controlling system easy. It’s also key to defeating certain enemies. That means gamers won’t have to switch between characters to complete missions. It can be frustrating having to leave an area to pick a new character for a mission.
Hopefully The Last Ronin will live up to the hype of the comic book series. Those are big shoes to fill, but it’s possible. Especially if the right company gets behind it. Games have evolved over time and this is the perfect time for the TMNT franchise to try something new. Who knows, maybe this will lead to other non Marvel and DC comic book characters getting their own video games.
