Fans can’t wait for the X-Men to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe and now we have our first look at what Margot Robbie could look like as Mystique thanks to some incredible fan art.

Across her career, Margot Robbie has taken on many roles; however, there is one role that has long eluded her: a role in a Marvel superhero film. It’s honestly puzzling how Marvel has never managed to extend an offer to Robbie resulting in her joining the DC Extended Universe instead in the role of Harley Quinn.

Robbie has been a staple in the DCEU for years, but with the franchise’s future shrouded in uncertainty, the rumor mill has begun turning with speculation growing over Robbie potentially jumping ship to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

While it’s uncertain whether Robbie might actually consider making the jump from the DCEU to the MCU, fans have vocally expressed an interest in seeing Robbie play one of the X-Men’s most iconic villains. And thanks to one talented artist, we now have an idea of what Robbie could look like in the MCU if tapped to join the ranks of the X-Men.

What Margot Robbie could look like as Mystique in the MCU

Knowing that the X-Men are preparing to make their debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe many artists have been finding inspiration in fan castings including digital artist cap.ironwidow, provided fans with the first chance to see what Robbie could look like as Mystique in the MCU.

In the jaw-dropping concept art, cap.ironwidow transforms Robbie into Mystique complete with the character’s iconic blue-hued skin and signature red hair in a look that is genuinely camera-ready!

What we love even more is that the artist incorporated Mystique’s iconic look including her well-known costume and even incorporates the signature skull belt often featured within the comics.

The art makes a major argument as to why Marvel should consider Robbie for the role of Mystique as she perfectly embodies the character in the fan concept art!

Could Margot Robbie join the MCU as Mystique?

Currently, Marvel has not confirmed any X-Men casting news, leaving fans in a stage of uncertainty so it’s unclear if Margot Robbie will join the MCU as Mystique or any Marvel character for that matter.

While Marvel has not made any announcements regarding plans for the X-Men, a rumor from Giant Freakin Robot suggested Marvel could be attempting to lure Robbie away from DC by offering her a key role in the MCU! According to the rumor, Robbie was said to be “in final talks for one of the biggest roles in the cinematic narrative.”

At the time of this rumor, it was speculated it was alluding to the X-Men, but we’ve since discovered the rumor was connected to the Fantastic Four. As it turned out, Robbie was offered the role of Sue Storm in the upcoming Marvel movie which suggests Robbie is indeed on Marvel’s radar.

Is Margot Robbie going to play Harley Quinn again?

Robbie seems to be more interested in suiting back up in the DCEU as Harley Quinn rather than taking on a new character in any superhero universe.

After taking a break from the role of Harley Quinn after filming Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad back-to-back, Robbie told Entertainment Tonight that she was eager to revisit the character:

"“No, I’ve had enough of a break. I’m ready to do her again. I did Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad back-to-back, so that was a lot of Harley all in a one-year period, but that was a while ago now. I’m always ready for more Harley!”"

A lot has changed since that interview was given though, with James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over as Co-Chairmen and Chief Executive Officers of DC Studios. Still, knowing Robbie has an interest in playing Harley again and that she’s had the chance to work closely with both Gunn and Safran in the past seems to bode well for her odds of remaining in the DCEU.

Is James Gunn replacing Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn?

There are a lot of unknowns about what the next chapter of the DCEU will look like. Recent months have seen many beloved and key actors from the DC slate being shown the door by DC Studios’ new heads. This list includes Henry Cavill and Dwayne Johnson, who are both out as Superman and Black Adam, respectively. Ben Affleck is said to be done playing Batman, Gal Gadot’s time as Wonder Woman might very well be coming to a close, and Jason Momoa is rumored to be ready to walk away from the Aquaman franchise following the sequel to 2018’s Aquaman.

With so much change going on over at DC, many fans are curious to know if any existing actors will continue their roles including Margot Robbie, whose turn as Harley Quinn has been a true standout within the franchise.

James Gunn has yet to reveal the plans for Harley Quinn in the new DC universe being built, however, he has made it clear he will “for sure” work with Margot Robbie again. Those were Gunn’s exact words when a fan asked if he had plans to work with Robbie again, which seems to hint that Gunn is interested in keeping Robbie in the fold. What’s interesting though is that Gunn doesn’t specifically mention working with her when it comes to the role of Harley Quinn but rather in a more general sense.

As such, it makes it hard to know whether Gunn does have active plans to keep Robbie around in his new DC Universe as Harley Quinn, or if he perhaps simply wants to work with her again in the future in some capacity. What we do know is there are rumors floating around the internet that suggest Robbie will be one of the few actors to make the jump from the DCEU to the DCU.

We should know more about the future of the DC film franchise in the months ahead, but DC would be wise to lock Robbie down before Marvel can lure her away. After all, she’s more than proven how amazing she can be in a superhero franchise and would be an incredible addition to the MCU.

Would you like to see Margot Robbie join the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Do you think Robbie would make a good Mystique?
