The Return of the King is the third and final film of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and it’s outstanding. The film won the Academy Award for Best Picture at the 2004 Oscars. It’s exquisite; there’s not much else I can say.
In the film, Frodo continues his march to Mount Doom, only to be derailed by Shelob, Gollum, and a few orcs. The Battle for Middle Earth takes place at Minas Tirith with Gandalf doing his best to save the city. Thankfully, Aragorn and company arrives to save the day. They also take the battle back to Mordor and make their last stand (and distraction) at the Black Gate.
I really wanted to rank The Fellowship of the Ring above The Return of the King, but it’s just not as good. There are so many epic moments in the third movie:
- Sam carrying Frodo up Mount Doom
- Rohan arriving at Minas Tirith to save the day
- Aragorn and the gang arriving by boat with an ghost army
- Éowyn killing the Witch-king of Angmar
- The whole battle at Minas Tirith
- Aragorn’s speech at the Black Gate
- Frodo’s reunion with Sam and the rest of the Fellowship
- Aragorn’s coronation (“My friends, you bow to no one)
I’m sure I forgot a bunch, but this movie is so good. That’s the ranking of The Lord of the Rings movies. Which one do you think is best?
