AI thinks Marvel is better than DC (and can you really blame it?)
By Cody Schultz
Comic book fans might have varying opinions on whether DC or Marvel is better but, according to AI, it’s Marvel who is the best of the best.
When it comes to the world of entertainment, there is no denying that Marvel and DC are two of the most impactful brands of all time. Across both companies’ storied histories, they’ve helped to introduce some of the most well-known and beloved characters in pop culture history.
From Batman and Superman to the Avengers and X-Men, both comic book brands are home to countless characters who have made lasting impacts on generations of fans. No matter whether you’re a fan of the comic books that started it all, the video games that have opened new creative outlets for fans to immerse themselves in the rich worlds inspired by the comics, or fans of the many TV shows and movies inspired by the comics, Marvel and DC truly have found a way to reach their audiences via every means possible.
While there are a lot of similarities between the two companies, the question that is often of hot debate among fans is which of the two brands is the superior brand. It’s a fair question to ask and one that always has a way of dividing fans, which is understandable as every fan has their own special connections to both Marvel and DC.
But what if you remove that personal connection from the equation? Well, that’s exactly what we decided to do when we proposed the question that has divided fans for decades by asking AI which company it considers to be the best of the best.
Is Marvel better than DC? (According to AI, it is)
As we wanted to keep things fair and ensure AI was taking into account the many facets of both Marvel and DC, we asked ChatGPT’s AI to tell us who is better when considering the success the two brands have had in comics, TV, and movies. With this prompt, AI quickly made up its mind in naming Marvel as the better comic book company:
"There’s no question that Marvel is the better comic book company!I mean, just look at the success they’ve had in recent years with their movies and TV shows. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is an absolute juggernaut, with box office hit after box office hit. And don’t even get me started on the amazing shows they’ve been producing for Disney+.Sure, DC has had some successes too, but let’s be real here. They just can’t compare to the Marvel machine. And when it comes to the comics themselves, Marvel has always been ahead of the curve. From the X-Men to Spider-Man to the Avengers, they’ve created some of the most iconic characters in comic book history.Don’t get me wrong, I have a lot of love for DC too. But when it comes down to it, Marvel is just on another level. Excelsior!"
Okay, talk about a mic-drop moment! Can’t quite say we were expecting AI to lean so heavily in one brand’s direction or to essentially roast DC in the process of pointing out the many successes that Marvel has had over the years.
There are absolutely arguments to be had over the remarks made over Marvel always being ahead of DC when it comes to comics, as both companies have had their share of groundbreaking moments and created some truly amazing characters. But you do have to agree that Marvel has more top-tier heroes as it’s likely the average comic book fan can name off more Marvel characters than they can DC characters. Even when it comes to iconic comic book teams, the Justice League is typically the first and only DC team that will come right to mind when it’s easy to look at Marvel’s collection and start listing off its iconic teams of heroes.
Prior to the launch of its Disney Plus shows, there is no denying DC had owned the world of TV with some amazing television series inspired by its characters. Pre-WandaVision, the only two Marvel shows likely to come right to mind are recent hits from ABC in Agent Carter and Agents of SHIELD. Meanwhile, it’s easy to list iconic DC shows that came before the Arrowverse with a list that includes the likes of Wonder Woman, Batman, and Smallville. And it’s just as easy to name off non-Arrowverse DC shows that have captivated audiences such as Gotham, Titans, Doom Patrol, and Lucifer.
Now, when it comes to movies, Marvel is king. Sure there have been some amazing DC movies over the years and those movies’ successes and impacts should not be discounted, but DC has also been plagued by ill-received movies and directionless franchises. Marvel meanwhile has managed to craft a connected universe, unlike anything we had ever seen before. And while the MCU’s age is starting to show, there is no denying the franchise is still turning out some amazing titles such as last fall’s Wakanda Forever.
When taking a look at the big picture, it’s easy to understand why AI gave the win to Marvel. The brand has consistently managed to find ways to edge out its competitor across various mediums and remains a dominant force in the entertainment industry that shows no signs of slowing down.
