3. Captain America: The First Avenger

  • Release Year: 2011
  • Director: Joe Johnston
  • Cast: Chris Evans, Tommy Lee Jones, Hugo Weaving, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, Dominic Cooper, Toby Jones, Neal McDonough, Derek Luke, and Stanley Tucci

Captain America: The First Avenger tells the origin story of Captain America. In the film, which is set during World War 2, Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans, is ineligible to join the fight because of a medical condition. An experimental treatment turns him into Captain America, a super soldier, who is responsible for stopping HYDRA and Red Skull, who is going to try to take over the world using the tesseract, which comes up later A LOT in the MCU.

Overall, Captain America: The First Avenger is one of the best origin stories of the MCU that we’ve seen so far, but the movie falls a little short in some areas. Captain America: The First Avenger is probably the worst of the Captain America movies. There’s no doubt that Captain America: Civil War and Captain America: Winter Soldier is so much better than this movie.

With that said, The First Avenger holds up because it’s an integral part of the overall arc of the MCU. It’s the source of a lot of tension among the team simply because Steve Rogers is from a different generation. It adds a layer of drama to the team and sets up many of major story arcs that plays out in future MCU movies.
