5. Jean Grey

While we may not be able to include Wolverine on this list, we can include an X-Men character. Stan Lee brought Jean Grey to life and she was the person to put the “men” in X-Men. Without her, the team would have been nothing.

Had Jean Grey allowed her powers to develop more and been a far more confident character overall, she would have certainly been way more powerful than Magneto. However, what makes her hit the top five is her deep layers.

Jean is like an onion. When you first see her, you only get that first layer. It takes more appearances and more stories based on her to figure out who she is and what she wants.

This is a woman with extraordinary power. She’s an Omega-level mutant, able to manipulate matter and read minds. Hey, she can even manipulate timelines. Fortunately, she’s mostly on the side of good, otherwise the whole universe would have been completely destroyed by now.

And if all of that wasn’t enough, Jean Grey is the woman who can bring herself back from the dead. She’s the Phoenix.

Some would view that as a Mary Sue character. It’s the depths and layers that prevent that from being the case. The world is her oyster, but she sits back and observes. She watches and learns. There are certainly many other strong female characters as I’ve already pointed out, but none of them are like Jean Grey.
