Superman: Legacy gets exciting update from James Gunn
The latest Superman reboot has stepped closer to cameras rolling as pre-production begins.
GamesRadar+ (formerly Total Film) plus Empire broke the news that writer-director James Gunn of Superman: Legacy has crossed the next threshold of the filmmaking process in pre-production. He teased fans with a tweet of the title page of the film’s screenplay with a statement.
This was on Superman Anniversary Day celebrating 85 years of the world’s first superhero that made his first appearance in Action Comics No. 1 back in 1938. The storyteller, filmmaker, and studio executive of DC Studios published this tweet:
So what happens now for Superman: Legacy?
During pre-production, a script is usually locked in terms of scenes or is about to be done. The final draft of the script is turned into a shooting script; this is where the budget, production schedule, and locations are finalized. Final casting, rehearsals, and hiring of a production team and crew is then arranged.
We should expect some casting announcements to be made in the coming months since Gunn debunked Grace Randolph’s scoop that Logan Lerman may be one of the picks and the frontrunner as the Last Son of Krypton. While Gunn revealed a “private list” and preliminary “material for auditions.” Meetings with actors are likely to take place.
When do cameras roll for Superman: Legacy?
It is too early to say when principal photography will begin as we do not even have our Superman quite yet. As the Guardians of the Galaxy director stated on Twitter, production and costume design are underway. It will take a while before all of the preparations are made like sets being built, locations scouted, and some pre-vis. work, etc.
If Gunn wants to make that July 2025 release date then ideally filming should begin either toward the fall of this year or the second quarter of 2024. Filming on this scale could take anywhere between four to six months. That does not even include pickups or reshoots for test screenings. This is exciting news that the film entered pre-production. It means that the CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery trusts Gunn’s vision. Superman Legacy is set to take the flight to theaters on July 11, 2025.
