6. Superman III

  • Release Year:1983
  • Director: Sidney J. Furie
  • Cast: Christopher Reeve, Richard Pryor, Jackie Cooper, Marc McClure, Annette O’Toole, Annie Ross, Pamela Stephenson, Robert Vaughn, and Margot Kidder

Superman III is the third Superman movie, and it was released in theaters in 1983. Unfortunately, the third movie is just not that good. In fact, I’d call it bad. Somehow, after the magic achieved in the first two movies, the third Superman goes off the rails and sadly never makes it back on the tracks. It only gets worse in Superman IV, as mentioned.

In Superman III, Clark Kent returns to Smallville for his high school reunion and reunites with his old flame, Lana Lang, played by Annette O’Toole. Meanwhile, billionaire businessman Ross Webster, played by Robert Vaughn, recruits a computer programmer, Gus Gorman, played by Richard Pryor, to create a synthetic Kryptonite that can weaken Superman. As Superman begins to lose his powers, he also begins to exhibit uncharacteristic behavior, leading him to face off against his own alter ego, Clark Kent.

Just a masterpiece in why-are-they-doing-this filmmaking. Superman III is a big swing, but it’s a flop, to me, which is, again, disappointing with the first two Superman movies being so good.

And, now, we’re moving on to the most recent Superman movie, Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice.
