4. Man of Steel

  • Release Year: 2013
  • Director: Zack Snyder
  • Cast: Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Antje Traue, Ayelet Zurer, Christopher Meloni, and Russell Crowe

Man of Steel is officially the sixth Superman movie, but it’s Henry Cavill’s first Superman movie.  The film was released in 2013, which makes it the first movie of the DCEU. While it received mixed reviews, it’s still a solid watch, and it’s much better than the last movie on the list and its sequel, Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Man of Steel is a reset on the Superman story. We get Superman’s origin story that’s basically the same in every movie: his home planet of Krypton is destroyed, he comes to Earth, lives as Clark Kent, and saves the day as Superman. This time, Kryptonian General Zod, played by Michael Shannon, comes to Earth seeking the codex, a genetic codification of the Kryptonian race that Jor-El, Kal-El’s biological father, had sent to Earth with him. Zod plans to use the codex to rebuild Krypton on Earth by exterminating the human race.

From a story perspective, Man of Steel suffers a bit, in my opinion, but there’s no denying Cavill makes a good Superman. Zack Snyder and the crew did an incredible job with the effects and visuals in Man of Steel. For a movie that’s about a decade old now, the visuals hold up. From a filmmaking perspective, this movie is excellent. I just wish the story was a bit better.

Up next is Superman Returns starring Brandon Routh!
