Carrie Fisher gets a well deserved star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
By Mark Lynch
Carrie Fisher finally getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is something that should have happened before she passed.
There are certain performers that become icons in the world of movies. Among those people is Carrie Fisher.
In 1977, Star Wars: A New Hope was released. It was the beginning of what became one of the biggest franchises to ever be released. Its influence helped pave the way for sci-fi movies forever. One of its stars was Carrie Fisher who played Princess Leia. Without Leia, the Empire would have continued to rule the galaxy. That being said, her character did more for the real world than the fictional one.
Carrie Fisher paving the way for powerful women in action movies is important. She was one of the first women in action and sci-fi to be more than just a beautiful woman to be looked at. At no point did she back down from a challenge or intimidation. If not for her, there may not have been a Ripley in Alien, Furiosa in Mad Max, or Lara Croft in Tomb Raiders (video games count too). This is one of the reasons why her getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is long overdue.
It isn’t just Carrie Fisher’s time as an actress that makes her Walk of Fame star overdo. She’s been an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, mental health, women’s rights, and more for years. Not only was she an advocate, she was loud and proud. It’s one thing to donate money in private. It’s another one to talk about it and never surrender to people who are against her. She’s also been honest about her drug use and bipolar disorder. It’s helped people going through the same thing get the help they need to live better and more productive lives.
The only unfortunate thing is Carrie Fisher isn’t around to see her star. Nevertheless, thanks to people like her daughter (Billie Lourd), friends like Mark Hamill, and the millions of fans around the world, her legacy will live on.
