3. Mystique

Movies: X-Men, X2, X-Men 3

"“You know people like you are the reason I didn’t like going to school as a child.”-Mystique"

When it comes to overlooked performances in a comic book project, Rebecca Romijn’s Mystique is at the top of that list. It wasn’t just that she acted a lot like the comic book character. Romijn was absolutely fantastic. As you can see in the quote above, she’s an example of what happens when someone is pushed too far. They eventually push back. And sometimes they push harder.

In Mystique’s case, she used her abilities to not just shove. She struck major blows to the establishment. Putting a beating on Wolverine, replacing Senator Kelly, and breaking into various computer systems are examples of her greatness. Without her, Ian McKellen’s Magneto doesn’t become the force seen in the movies.

You probably noticed that Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique isn’t on this list. One, she wasn’t really a villain. Raven spent most of her time in the X-Men movies as a hero. Second, she wasn’t that good. Jennifer Lawrence is a top-tier performer in Hollywood, but her performances in the X-Men movies weren’t up to the caliber that we’re used to seeing from her. There were moments when she was amazing, especially in X-Men: Days of Future Past. Because she was so good there you’d hope that would continue. It didn’t. Meanwhile, Rebecca Romijn was a ten every time she put on the blue makeup.
