5 actresses we want to see play Catwoman in the DC Universe
Zoe Kravitz is an amazing Selena Kyle, but that’s a different universe. The DC Universe needs their own Catwoman.
Catwoman is one of DC Comics’ most iconic characters, and she’s been a fixture in Batman’s mythology for decades. While she’s primarily associated with the Dark Knight, there’s no reason she can’t stand on her own two feet in a solo adventure, or be a key player in a team-up or ensemble movie. And with James Gunn and Peter Safran at the helm of the DC Universe, there’s no better time to bring this iconic feline to the big screen. Zoe Kravitz was and is still amazing as Selina Kyle in The Batman, but that’s a different universe.
Catwoman, a.k.a. Selina Kyle, was first introduced in 1940’s Batman Issue No.1 as a master thief and frequent adversary of the Caped Crusader. But over the years, she’s evolved into a complex character with her own unique moral code and motivations. She’s been an ally to Batman, a lover, a thief, and a vigilante in her own right. She’s had multiple solo series over the years, including an acclaimed run by writer Ed Brubaker that delved deep into Selina’s psyche and her past.
But Catwoman’s life and adventures extend far beyond Gotham City. She’s been a globetrotter, a member of the Justice League, and a hero in her own right. Her solo series has seen her travel to exotic locales and take on larger-than-life threats, including the evil organization Spyral and the villainous Black Mask. And with her expertise in martial arts, thievery, and espionage, there’s no end to the kind of adventures she could have on the big screen.
Of course, bringing Catwoman to life on the big screen requires the right actress. Over the years, Selina has been played by a number of talented performers, including Julie Newmar, Michelle Pfeiffer, Anne Hathaway, and most recently Zoe Kravitz. But finding the right actress to capture Selina’s complexity, strength, and vulnerability is crucial. And with the right performer, there’s no reason Catwoman can’t be the next big breakout star of the DCU.
A solo movie could happen in a world away from Matt Reeves’ Batman Universe. With James Gunn and Peter Safran at the helm of the DCU, there’s never been a better time to bring this iconic character to life in her own solo adventure or as part of a team-up or ensemble film such as Gotham City Sirens.
