Despicable Me movies, ranked

Despicable Me is one of the most popular and highest-grossing film franchises of the last decade-plus. So far, we’ve seen five Despicable Me movies, and there are more Despicable Me movies in the works with Despicable Me 4 scheduled to arrive in 2024. The official premiere for Despicable Me 4 is scheduled for July 3, 2024, so we have a little more than a year to watch the movies again.

While we wait for the new Despicable Me movie, we thought it would be a good time to share our ranking of the five Despicable Me movies we’ve seen so far. That includes the first three Despicable Me movies, along with the two Minions prequels.

Here’s how to watch the Despicable Me and Minions movies in order:

  • Despicable Me (2010)
  • Despicable Me 2 (2013)
  • Minions (2015)
  • Despicable Me 3 (2017)
  • Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022)

There’s no doubt the Despicable Me franchise is one of the most important animated movies of modern history, and they’re so much fun. It’s been amazing to see what the team at Illumination has been able to create with this franchise. And, we can’t wait to see what’s next. I feel like these movies are in the perfect sweet spot for animated movies.

I always feel like I have to mention this: none of these movies are bad. I love all five of the Despicable Me movies, but some are just better than others. That’s what this ranking is about.

Also, as of May 2023, you can watch all five Despicable Me movies on Peacock and Netflix. They’re not all available on one streaming service, but you can watch them all if you have a subscription for both streaming services.
