5. Minions

  • Release Year: 2015
  • Director: Kyle Balda and Pierre Coffin
  • Cast: Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton, Allison Janney, Steve Coogan, Jennifer Saunders, Pierre Coffin, and Geoffrey Rush

Minions is the third movie of the Despicable Me franchise. It was released in 2015, two years after Despicable Me 2 and two years before Despicable Me 3. The film is a prequel that tells the story of the minions and their origins.

In the movie, Kevin, Stuart, and Bob, three minions voiced by Pierre Coffin, are in need of a new villain to assist. They meet Scarlet Overkill, voiced by Sandra Bullock, at Villain-Con in New York City in the 1960s and help the supervillain in a heist to steal Queen Elizabeth II’s crown. That’s just where things start to get interesting.

Overall, Minions is the worst of the Despicable Me movies for a few reasons, but mainly, the story is a bit lacking compared to the other four movies. It’s also the first movie of the franchise that goes away from Gru, voiced by Steve Carell) one of the reasons why the franchise has been so successful.

Don’t worry if you don’t love Minions, though. The franchise gets back on track in the second prequel, Minions: The Rise of Gru, which introduces Gru’s origin story and reveals how he became a supervillain.

Up next is Despicable Me 3!
