4. Annabelle: Creation

Going back in time again, the 2017 movie Annabelle: Creation was directed by David F. Sandberg and takes place in the ’50s. While Annabelle gives us some backstory to the demonic doll, Annabelle: Creation is more of a fleshed-out origin story. The movie follows orphaned girls who are taken in by a former dollmaker (Anthony LaPaglia) and his wife (Miranda Otto). When one of them discovers the Annabelle doll in the house, she mistakenly unleashes evil forces.

There’s really solid suspense in Annabelle: Creation, as well as well-executed scares. The setting only adds to the overall creepiness as it takes place in an old house. But just like the other entries I’ve talked about on this list so far, the plot is still pretty predictable and relies too heavily on overdone horror movie tropes. Overall, it’s a pretty enjoyable movie despite not doing anything particularly special.

3. Annabelle Comes Home

The most recent Annabelle movie came in 2019 with Annabelle Comes Home. This might not be a popular opinion, but this one’s my favorite out of the bunch. It’s directed by Gary Dauberman and takes place in the early ’70s. This one takes more of a focus on the Warren Family, specifically the daughter Judy (Mckenna Grace). When Ed and Lorraine must leave Judy in the care of a babysitter so they can go off to investigate a paranormal case, the night turns dangerous as the Annabelle doll is taken out of her case.

The suspense in Annabelle Comes Home is super entertaining, and I love the overall ’70s vibe. Though the characters aren’t super well-developed, they’re still easy to root for. Grace gives a great performance as Judy and it’s awesome to see Ed and Lorraine in action again. It might not be the most groundbreaking horror movie, but it’s still a fun ride for those who enjoy the supernatural genre.
