X-Men: Nightcrawler leaves Krakoa after losing hope in the nation
By Mark Lynch
At the end of X-Men: Before the Fall: Sons of X, Nightcrawler teleports off of Krakoa. A move that could lead to more mutants leaving.
When Krakoa was first introduced in Marvel Comics, it was all about peace among mutants. For the first time ever, mutants were given a place they could call their own. They were a real nation with a government acknowledged by the United Nations (read Powers of X and House of X for more on that), medicine for trade, and diplomatic immunity. More than that, they were advancing as a culture. One of the biggest reasons for that is Nightcrawler.
Back in 2020’s X-Men No. 7, Nightcrawler was having trouble with his faith after seeing regaining their abilities via the Crucible. At the end of the issue, Kurt said it was time to start a mutant religion. In a way, he succeeds. Way of X concludes with Nightcrawler and Legion creating something new.
Inside of Legion’s head was an altar of sorts. A place where mutants could find fellowship with each other in a peaceful and non-judgmental place. This gave Nightcrawler more hope than he could have asked for. However, that hope was taken away in X-Men: Before the Fall: Sons of X. Nightcrawler lost his faith and left Krakoa.
Why this is a big deal for the X-Men?
The X-Men and Krakoa are in trouble. Two of their most important members have left Krakoa. First, it was Wolverine. After finding out that Charles Xavier let Beast run wild, it looks like he’s done with Krakoa.
Towards the end of X-Men: Before the Fall: Sons of X Nightcrawler said, “I have tried so hard to navigate this dream of joy and hope. With my conscience held before me… and yet it seems to me that one of the dangers of trying to become a people, is that we forget how to be people.” After telling Cyclops this, he teleports away.
The heart and the soul of the X-Men have left Krakoa and more will follow. As of now, we don’t know what’s next for Wolverine in regards to the X-Men and Krakoa. Nightcrawler’s adventures will continue in Uncanny Spider-Man, but who knows what that will end with. Especially with his experience with Mother Righteous likely being connected to the Fall of X.
