Karl Urban playing Mortal Kombat’s Johnny Cage is another example of getting the casting wrong.
Mortal Kombat changed video games forever. Before this game was released, characters weren’t getting their heads ripped off in a bloody way. It allowed video game creators to have more freedom with their projects. This led to Mortal Kombat producing two movies. The first could be considered a classic. Meanwhile, the sequel was an abomination. It made Batman and Robin look like Avengers: Endgame.
The video game’s continued popularity is the reason Mortal Kombat released its first movie in over two decades. One of the problems people had with the project was the absence of Johnny Cage. However, not casting him kept fans wondering who would play him in the sequel. According to The Wrap, popular actor Karl Urban is in talks to play the charismatic and entertaining Johnny Cage. A casting that does and doesn’t make sense.
Karl Urban always leaves his mark on whatever project he’s in. He’s fantastic as Billy Butcher in The Boys, his role in Judge Dredd was unforgettable, and he’ll never be forgotten in Lord of the Rings. This shows that Urban is no stranger to nerd projects.
It’s not as if he can’t portray Johnny Cage. Fans have seen him be goofy, tough, and dramatic. All of which is needed to play Cage. His age shouldn’t be an issue either. Cage could be an older actor in Mortal Kombat 2 or Urban can look like he’s in his 30s. Casting him isn’t a bad decision. The problem is WWE’s The Miz was a better option.
After Mortal Kombat was released in 2021, The Miz was trending on Twitter. Everyone who’s seen The Miz on any WWE project knows this was a good decision. In fact, a debate could be made that he’s WWE’s Johnny Cage. Underrated by a lot of fans like Cage is by his peers despite their accomplishments. Both consider themselves A-Listers. And they’re among the most captivating people in their field. It also doesn’t help that they both look good with sunglasses on.
As of now, there’s no guarantee that Karl Urban will play Johnny Cage. As of now, he’s only in final talks. Before this article is released Urban could deny the rumors or the deal could fall through. If that happens, The Miz should be the first person in line to play Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2. Either way, both performers would do the character justice.
