MCU: All 11 Marvel Phase 3 movies ranked from worst to best
11. Ant-Man and the Wasp
After Avengers: Infinity War, there was an inevitable sense of doom. Watching half of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes turn into dust when the world needed them the most was heartbreaking, to say the least. So while everyone waited for Avengers: Endgame to release and bring a conclusion to the first saga in the MCU, a breather was needed. And wouldn’t you know it, that’s exactly what Ant-Man and the Wasp delivered. The small-scoped story was a reminder that Marvel projects can be fun and family-friendly.
The movie dealt with the consequences of Captain America: Civil War, where Scott supported Steve Rogers in his mission to stand against the Sokovia Accords. Not only that but the post-credits scene ties directly into the events of Avengers: Endgame. However, everything that came in between felt like a filler.
Sure, the second entry in Scott Lang’s saga managed to be better than the original without a doubt. Paul Rudd delivered a charming performance that provoked many laughs and received praise from audiences. However many Marvel movies have plenty of funny moments and charismatic main characters as well. So it doesn’t come as a surprise Ant-Man and the Wasp is mostly forgettable.
Many believed the film would have incredible ramifications for the MCU. After all, why would it release in between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame? There was a lot of speculation and excitement building up towards its release. Many theories surfaced claiming that the Quantum Realm was the key to bringing every dead hero back to life. And while that turned out to be somewhat true, we didn’t get to see much of it in Ant-Man and the Wasp. The Quantum Realm was barely explored at all, delegating that duty to future projects. And while we finally got to see Evangeline Lilly kick ass as the Wasp, that wasn’t enough to make the movie stand out.
Overall Ant-Man and the Wasp isn’t terrible at all. There are a lot of laughs to be had with it, but that’s about it. Its low rewatch value and the same reuse of the Marvel formula make it a weak entry compared to other MCU projects, especially in Phase 3.
