Not since Lucifer was canceled by FOX has a streaming service stepped in to save a DC show, but it seems one Arrowverse spinoff might break that streak.

It’s been a rough few years for Arrowverse fans, and even that might be an understatement.

Over the course of the last three years, the Arrowverse as we’ve known it has come crumbling down before our eyes beginning in 2020 with the final season of Arrow. After the flagship series signed off with its final season, the franchise quickly began to take hit after hit starting with Supergirl and Black Lightning both being final seasoned in 2021. Then came 2022.

With the sale of The CW to Nexstar, 2022 marked the network’s bloodiest year in its history with half of the network’s lineup canceled in one fell swoop including Arrowverse favorites Batwoman and Legends of Tomorrow. Not long after, The Flash was final seasoned meaning Superman & Lois would be the last Arrowverse series standing.

It seemed like Superman & Lois would have no problem securing a renewal given the show’s critical success and popularity among audiences. However, the show has now found itself on the chopping block along with Gotham Knights with reports suggesting only one show will get renewed. Fortunately, it’s looking like HBO Max might finally step in to save a show… at least that’s what the latest rumors circulating seem to suggest!

Could HBO Max save Superman and Lois?

Although HBO Max has become known for canceling shows rather than stepping in to save canceled shows, it seems there is a strong possibility HBO Max might be planning to step in to save Superman & Lois should The CW opt not to renew the series for a fourth season.

According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, there is a strong possibility The CW will only renew one of its two remaining DC superhero series with the odds landing in Gotham Knights‘ favor due to the show being cheaper. Should this happen and the network cancel Superman & Lois, it is reported that HBO Max has emerged as a possible landing spot for the series.

While nothing is official, the fact that sources are reporting active conversations are unfolding about HBO Max saving Superman & Lois seems to suggest Warner Bros and DC won’t be backing down without a fight should The CW opt to cancel the acclaimed Arrowverse offshoot.

If HBO Max were to indeed save the show for a fourth season, it would mark the streaming service’s first major play in the Save Our Show era and could be a major get for HBO Max. It would also mark the first time a DC superhero show has been saved by a streaming service since Netflix saved Lucifer after its cancellation on FOX.
