6. Scream 3 (2000)

It’s easy for the third instalment, released in 2000, to fall through the cracks – much like the film’s lone killer Roman Bridger (Scott Foley). While the film sums up the original trilogy and the mystery around main protagonist Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) nicely, it fails to live up to any of the other movies in the franchise.

This could be due to the fact that Ehren Kruger had replaced Williamson as the film’s screenwriter. Though Williamson did provide an initial five-page outline to guide the script, Kruger taking over meant that the Craven-Williamson collaboration — which totally nailed the tone of the first two movies – was not there to capture that same tone for the third instalment.

However, the film does have a few things going for it, such as the return of our trio of protagonists, Sidney, Dewey (David Arquette) and Gail (Courtney Cox). The film’s setting in Hollywood — centered on the making of a Stab movie — is mightily appropriate for the franchise.

Ultimately though, this instalment fails to deliver the same expectations of the previous instalments of a group of horror film-savvy teens finding themselves having to survive their own horror movie. It has its moments, but it’s not on the same level as its predecessors.
