Would DC Comics’ Nightwing be tempted by the prospect of permanently having superhuman powers or would he send Neron back to Hell?

“What would character XYZ be like if they had superpowers?” This is a question every comic book fan has asked.

Batman and The Punisher are usually the first people that come to mind. They both accomplish a lot without superhuman abilities. However, Frank Castle gained powers given to him by The Hand. In the time he had powers, he took out a plethora of deplorable human beings. Some of them were deemed untouchable. It was a good example of what could be. An even better one happened in DC Comics Nightwing No. 104 where Dick Grayson gets powers similar to Superman’s.

A lord of Hell and fallen angel Neron needed the soul of Blockbuster’s daughter Olivia. In order to tempt Nightwing into giving her to him, he gave Nightwing superhuman powers. Neron tempted Blüdhaven’s hero in a brilliant way. He knows Nightwing isn’t selfish, so Neron gives him a taste of superpower for two hours. During that time, Nightwing helped defeat Gorilla Grodd and stopped an illegal water capture. He would have done more if he had more time. Of course, when the time came, Nightwing declined Neron’s offer and sent the Hell Lord back to the underworld defeated and embarrassed.

Defeating a powerful DC Comics villain like Neron after losing his powers is impressive, but it’s not surprising. Nightwing is an A-list hero. Years of working with Batman and *being* the Dark Knight gave him the mentality to be prepared for anything. The part that may get lost in this issue is the talk he had with Superman.

The Man of Steel took Nightwing to space so he could see Earth in a different way. During their conversation, this writer realized that the two are a lot alike. It isn’t just their moral compass. They both want to do more than punch villains. It’s one of the big reasons why Dick Grayson has become one of the best heroes in DC Comics, why the Justice League felt strongly about leaving him in charge, and why Tom Taylor’s current run is becoming a classic.
