Nicolas Cage once suited up as Superman and he does so again in The Flash leading to a stunning return from the iconic actor.

Over the years, there have been many amazing actors who have gotten the chance to suit up as the Man of Steel on both the big and small screen.

From Henry Cavill and Tyler Hoechlin to Christopher Reeve and Tom Welling, we’ve seen some iconic performances over the years from those who took on the role of Superman and were given the chance to run with the character — with some delivering more memorable performances than others. However, there is one actor who never got the chance to see his Superman take flight: Nicolas Cage.

In the late 1990s, Cage was set to play the Man of Steel in a film called Superman Lives, which was to be directed by Tim Burton who had, of course, found success directing and adapting Batman with Michael Keaton in the role. Despite initial excitement about the project, Superman Lives faced a number of setbacks and was never completed, leaving fans to wonder what Cage’s portrayal of the Man of Steel might have been like.

While Superman Lives may have never seen the light of day, fans were treated to a few behind-the-scenes glimpses of Cage’s unique Superman costume which teased what could have been but never did we get the chance to actually see what a Nicolas Cage Superman would have brought to the DC universe. However, that all may soon be changing.

Fans might not have ever gotten the chance to see Cage suit up for Burton’s take on Superman back in the day, but it seems the actor could soon be getting the chance to suit up as Superman on the big screen after three decades!

Nicolas Cage as Superman in The Flash (fan art)

As rumors about Nicolas Cage appearing as Superman in The Flash swirled, digital artist Samukarts has debuted a stunning piece of fan art that allows fans to see what Cage might look like as the Man of Steel in the upcoming film.

In the stunning concept art, Cage is transformed back into the Man of Steel — a character he almost played on the big screen nearly three decades ago.

It’s clear Henry Cavill’s suit served as the inspiration for the art, though it’s more likely we’ll see him rock a suit similar to the one he was originally intended to wear in Superman Lives. We do, however, get to see Cage rocking the long-haired style his Superman was set to don in the film which perfectly ties the look together. And while we don’t see Cage in the suit he’s most likely to don, the concept art does an amazing job of allowing us to see what Cage might look like in The Flash.

The Flash spoilers ahead.

Is Nicolas Cage playing Superman in The Flash movie?

Nicolas Cage once again suits up as Superman and this time his time as the Man of Steel actually lives to see the light of day.

Prior to the film’s release, in an interview with Esquire Middle East, The Flash director Andy Muschietti revealed that he was able to land Cage for a cameo in the upcoming DC Comics superhero film — a reveal that is actually quite surprising given the nature of the cameo.

"“Nic was absolutely wonderful. Although the role was a cameo, he dove into it. I dreamt all my life to work with him. I hope I can work with him again soon. He is a massive Superman fan. A comic book fanatic,” Muschetti revealed."

There had been an eagerness among fans to see if the cameo would make the final cut of the film and we can report Cage does indeed appear as the Man of Steel in The Flash movie.

During a sequence in the final act of the film, Barry enters the Speed Force where he sees a number of alternate universes collapsing upon themselves due to his actions. In one of these universes, fans get the chance to see a world where Cage’s Superman is alive and well out fighting giant mutant spiders in order to protect his planet. The moment is brief, but it’s a fun Easter egg for DC fans who always wondered what could have been had Warner Bros. not scraped the Cage movie.
