2. Halloween (2018)
Halloween is a beloved horror franchise that has been around for over 40 years, but let’s be honest – the sequels haven’t always lived up to the original. That is until Halloween (2018) came along. This movie is a fantastic retcon that breathes new life into the franchise and proves that Michael Myers is still a force to be reckoned with.
The film serves as a direct sequel to the original 1978 Halloween film, ignoring all of the sequels that followed. This was a bold move, but it paid off more than the studio likely ever expected.
The story picks up 40 years after the events of the original film and shows a now-elderly Laurie Strode (played brilliantly by Jamie Lee Curtis) living with the trauma of her encounter with Michael Myers all those years ago.
The movie is both a homage to the original film but one of the most impressive aspects of the film is how it manages to be a sequel to the original while still standing on its own as a great horror movie. You don’t need to have seen the previous films to enjoy this one – it’s a standalone masterpiece that can be appreciated by both longtime fans and newcomers to the franchise.
