A Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover could be in the works
By Mark Lynch
A Transformers vs G.I. Joe movie could be coming to theaters and it would be the event of the year. It could also start the momentum for more movies like this.
The Transformers movies have grossed over a billion dollars. That isn’t including Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. When it’s released on June 9, 2023 that number will significantly go up.
The franchise may not be as revered as the best that Hollywood has to offer, but people still go see them because fans are aware of what’s going to happen: Robots will hit each other with fists, giant weapons, and whatever else they can get their hands on.
Another similar franchise where people go in with low expectations is G.I. Joe. They aren’t bad movies, just not emotionally driven.
If you’re a fan of both projects, there might be good news coming. A movie crossover could be on its way.
As reported by Comic Book Resources, a crossover between the two franchises could be in the works. The report comes from Twitter user MyTimeToShineHello, who has a good track record with rumors, who tweeted, “It’s happening!” with a picture of the 2003 Transformers vs G.I. Joe Image comic book.
As of now, nothing has been confirmed by either of the film’s production companies. Nevertheless, this isn’t the crossover fans may have wanted, but it’s the one we deserve.
If The Expendables, John Wick, and Violent Night have taught this writer anything, it’s that there will always be a market for action movies in which the violence is creative. Sometimes fans don’t want or need a project with a ton of deep moments. A lot of the time, explosions, witty (or bad) banter, and calamity can be enough. A movie featuring a fight (and eventual team-up) between The Transformers and G.I. Joe would exactly be that. Two hours of mindlessness and escapism.
Something like this shouldn’t end with The Transformers and G.I. Joe. If the aforementioned crossover is successful, who knows what’s next? It’s already happened with Batman and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Why not with other franchises? Fans of fighting games have wanted to see Mortal Kombat vs Street Fighter for decades. Movie studios may not want to play in the same sandbox but it’s something worth considering. If Sony and Marvel Studios can make it happen, there’s a chance for Mortal Kombat vs Street Fighter or Ninja Turtles and Power Ranger to become movies, right?
Stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow for more if this goes from a rumor to an actual project.
