6. Spider-Man

  • Release Year: 2002
  • Director: Sam Raimi

I can’t believe I’m ranking Spider-Man, the original, and one of the most important superhero movies of all time as No. 5 on this list. I love the original Spider-Man. Sam Raimi’s vision and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man was the catalyst, in my opinion, of showing the potential of superhero movies. Without Spider-Man, it’s hard to imagine that Marvel would have been able to build what they have because it worked so well.

In the movie, we see Peter Parker’s origin story for the first time on the big screen, getting bit by the spider, losing Uncle Ben, and trying to undo the pain he feels responsible for by keeping New York City safe. We also see how Peter’s personal life begins to create conflict with his desire to protect the city. MJ and Harry need more from Peter, but he’s not able to give them what they need.

One of the best parts of Spider-Man was Willem Dafoe’s Norman Osborn/Green Goblin. He’s such an incredible villain, which is a major reason why he was brought back in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Of all of the rankings, I think this is the one people will have the hardest time with. The other Spider-Man movies are just a little bit better.
