2. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore

Release Year: 2022

Director: David Yates

Starring: Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, Jude Law as Albus Dumbledore, Dan Folger as Jacob Kowalski, Alison Sudol as Queenie Goldstein, Mads Mikkelsen as Gellert Grindelwald, Katherine Waterston as Tina Goldstein, and Ezra Miller as Credence Barebone/Aurelius Dumbledore

The third installment in the Fantastic Beasts series, The Secrets of Dumbledore, was one of the many movies affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Scheduled to begin production in March 2020, filming was delayed and the movie eventually came out in 2022. Fortunately, this one is an improvement from The Crimes of Grindelwald, but nowhere near as good as the first.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore picks up after the shocking conclusion to the second installment, continuing with Newt’s mission alongside Dumbledore to try and take down Grindelwald. This time around, Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen replaces Johnny Depp, which is a much better fit for the part. Mikkelsen is very talented and Harry Potter fans were pleased with the recast.

While The Secrets of Dumbledore features strong performances and entertaining scenes, it still can’t capture the magic of The Wizarding World we all fell in love with from Harry Potter. And it doesn’t seem like fans or critics would disagree with that take. The movie made $407.2 million at the worldwide box office, making it the lowest-grossing installment of the Harry Potter franchise. At the time of this writing, it’s got a measly Rotten Tomatoes score of 46% — which is an improvement from the sad 35% score The Crimes of Grindelwald holds!
