8. Mulan

Disney’s live-action remake of Mulan brings the beloved animated classic to life in a whole new way. The movie tells the story of a young woman who disguises herself as a man to join the army and fight against the invading Huns.

Liu Yifei, who plays Mulan, and Donnie Yen, who plays Commander Tung were perfectly cast in their roles and helped to carry the film. Yifei delivers a captivating and powerful performance as the brave and determined warrior, while Yen brings depth and gravitas to his role as her mentor. The supporting cast, which includes Jet Li, Gong Li, and Tzi Ma, also delivers impressive performances that add to the film’s emotional weight.

While the film was criticized by fans of the original animated film due to its decision to remove certain beloved aspects from the mix, including its music and beloved characters such as Mushu, that doesn’t in any way discount the amazing new direction the creative team took the film in.

The film is truly breathtaking and gets to tell a story that became a bit watered down in the animated classic which helps to set it aside from its animated counterpart. Although it would have been amazing to see a live-action adaptation of certain elements from the film, Mulan stood on its own and took bold risks that absolutely paid off.
