Canceled DC show makes CW history (in the worst possible way)
By Cody Schultz
Gotham Knights has made DC Comics history, but in the worst possible way with the show’s cancellation marking a first for The CW.
Before Gotham Knights even premiered, the deck was stacked against the newest series from Warner Bros. and DC Comics. Many fans wrote the show off out of frustration with The CW which canceled half its lineup earlier in the year including hit series such as Legends of Tomorrow and Batwoman with many fans opting not to watch the show. Some chose not to watch out of spite, others out of fear that The CW would end up canceling it in the end.
Sadly, for fans of the series, CW neigh sayers were correct in their assumption that the show would not return for a second season. While Superman & Lois and All American: Homecoming managed to secure last-minute renewals, Gotham Knights was canceled by the network and will not be coming back for a second season.
With the show’s cancellation, history was made at The CW and not the kind of history a show wants to be a part of.
For the first time in the history of the network, The CW did not renew a single one of its new series with Gotham Knights, The Winchesters, and Walker: Independence all being canceled by the network after just one season.
Every The CW show canceled in 2023
Much like 2022, 2023 has been a rough year for fans of The CW. While the network handed out renewals to a handful of shows, it also decided to bring an end to many hit series this season. In 2023, The CW canceled Gotham Knights, The Winchesters, Walker: Independence, Two Sentence Horror Stories, Would I Lie to You?, and The Professionals. It also opted to bring an end to The Flash, Riverdale, and Nancy Drew, which all received final seasons.
On the renewal front, there were some shows lucky enough to secure another season. In total, seven shows were renewed for the 2023-24 season including All American, All American: Homecoming, Penn & Teller: Fool Us, Sullivan’s Crossing, Superman & Lois, Walker, Whose’s Line is It Anyway? and World’s Funniest.
