Gotham Knights will not be getting renewed for a second season on The CW and many fans saw this coming.

The Arrowverse concluded with the series finale of The Flash on May 24. The CW could have created new DC Comics TV shows to take over from it if new owners Nexstar wished to. One of the new arrivals this season was DC TV series Gotham Knights. A project that focused on Gotham City where Batman was killed by the Court of Owls.

The pilot episode left a lot to be desired, but the potential was obvious. As the season went on, the show improved. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough. Deadline reports that Gotham Knights has been cancelled and will not be renewed for a second season.

Gotham Knights may have been doomed from the beginning. Not having Batman in a Gotham City show must have turned viewers away. On top of that, a recognized DC character wasn’t used to star in the show. Not having Batman or Bruce Wayne isn’t a big deal when the show is about what happens after his death. However not using another recognizable DC character like Dick Grayson (Nightwing), Jason Todd (Red Hood), Damian Wayne (Bruce Wayne’s son and Robin), was a mistake. This left actor main character Turner Hayes at a disadvantage.

Oscar Morgan could have put on an award winning performance and most viewers wouldn’t have cared. Comic book fans wanted to see the characters they knew. The sad part is that Gotham Knights was still full of recognizable characters. Harper Row (Fallon Smythe), Duela (Olivia Rose Keegan), Carrie Kelly (Navia Robinson), and Stephanie Brown (Anna Lore) are all Bat-Family members. And Misha Collins put on a great performance as Harvey Dent. It just wasn’t enough for The CW to keep the show going.

What’s next for The CW and DC?

Superman and Lois was among the few CW shows to be renewed.  After that, who knows what’s going to happen. The conclusion of the Arrowverse may have been the end of an era. Even season 4 of Superman and Lois is has been shortened to 10 episodes, reportedly for budget reasons. The CW is ready to move on from its superhero era, but Superman and Lois‘ popularity, critical acclaim, and strong ratings have earned it at least one more season.

The WB/CW did a lot for comic book shows, but nothing lasts forever. Gotham Knights could be the final nail in the coffin for new DC TV shows. Whenever Superman and Lois ends, it could be the end of the DC Comics projects on The CW.
