2. Thanos

Ever since The Avengers, Thanos has been lurking in the shadows, puppeteering cosmic chaos. But it was only in Avengers: Infinity War that we really got to see the purple-faced party pooper in action. With an impressive zero-count Infinity Stone collection before Infinity War, which actually became completed very, very easily – did Marvel finally make him the villain to beat?

Well, if you’re judging by universe-destabilizing actions, Thanos undoubtedly earns the “I turned half the universe to dust” trophy. As villains go, that’s pretty impressive. But when it comes to compelling, charismatic, and shockingly empathetic baddies, Thanos doesn’t quite nab the gold medal.

Sure, there are those who cheer him on as the greatest Marvel villain of all time. And while I’m not ready to hand him that title, I will give credit where it’s due: Infinity War does a fine job at adding layers to Thanos’ persona. A big hats-off to Josh Brolin, who somehow manages to sprinkle humanity into the maniacal Mad Titan’s character, making us wince as we feel a twinge of… sympathy? There are moments where Thanos almost manages to tug at our heartstrings – but then we remember the whole universe-halving thing.

Rest in peace, you purple complex cosmic calamity.
