Tom Holland touches on his mental health, how his new show, The Crowded Room, pushed him to his limits, and the status of his acting break.

Tom Holland, well-known as our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, already eight months into his hiatus, is basking in a rare opportunity to recharge his batteries and refocus his energies.

Despite being the face of a successful franchise like Spider-Man, The Crowded Room, where Holland plays the character of Danny Sullivan, pushed the actor to his emotional limits. He opened up about the mental toll the role took on him during an interview with Extra. Still, he made sure to express gratitude towards his dedicated fan base. Their unwavering support, he admitted, has been instrumental in transforming the show’s initial lukewarm reception into a celebratory success.

"“I would like to say a massive thank you to my fans, and the people that have seen the show,” Holland expressed, his usual charm intact. “We’re at 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. I feel so grateful that I have a wonderful community of people that support me and are there for me. I’m honored and really excited for the rest of the show to come out.”"

The limited series portrays a man’s arrest following his involvement in an NYC shooting in 1979. Inspired by the real-life Billy Mulligan, infamously known as The Campus Rapist, Sullivan’s character navigates the complexities of a publicized court case during the late 70s. The emotional intensity of the role, combined with the pressures of production, urged Holland to seek a much-needed breather.

Holland, while candidly discussing his mental health, admitted, “There did come a time where sort of was like, ‘I need to have a break.'” He added, “I am excited to see how it turns out, and I feel like our hard work wasn’t in vain.”

The actor’s struggle to detach himself from the demanding role was not just professional but personal. He shared with EW, “I had a bit of a meltdown at home and thinking like, ‘I’m going to shave my head. I need to shave my head because I need to get rid of this character.’ It was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before.”

Tom Holland gives fans update on his acting hiatus

When initially discussing his break after The Crowded Room, it was reported by many outlets that Tom Holland was taking a year off from acting which seemed to hint we wouldn’t see Holland working on anything new until 2024. However, Holland has since revealed he’s actually almost finished with the year-long break.

During an appearance on Live with Kelly and MarkHolland revealed that he’s actually eight months into his acting break which means he’s looking to get back to acting toward the end of 2023.

As fans eagerly wait for the unveiling of Holland’s riveting performance, one thing remains clear – an actor’s job extends far beyond what we see on screen. It’s a taxing endeavor that sometimes demands stepping back and focusing on oneself. It’s hard for some to remember celebrities are still only humans who go through similar things we do, if not the same.

The Crowded Room‘s first three episodes will be available on Apple TV+ from June 9, with new episodes being released weekly until July 28.
