4. Jackie Brown

Tarantino’s most underrated movie Jackie Brown is one that’s not as talked-about as his other titles but is definitely worthy to be named one of his best. Released in 1997, the film is an adaptation of the 1992 book Rum Punch by Elmore Leonard and stars Pam Grier, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert DeNiro, Bridget Fonda, and Robert Forster.

Grier is an absolute icon and she shines in the leading role, with her supporting cast also giving great performances. Jackie Brown follows the titular character, a flight attendant who’s facing jail time after smuggling money for her boss. As she works with law enforcement and faces pressure from her boss, she decides to work alone and con both parties.

Jackie Brown is an awesome story with complex characters and sharp dialogue. It’s unpredictable, entertaining, and its nonlinear format really works.

3. Inglourious Basterds

Let me start out by saying my top three Tarantino movies are all 10/10 in my book. Inglorious Basterds is just a smidge not as great as my top two. Taking a stab at a historical drama with, of course, many artistic liberties, this one takes place in World War II and features an ensemble cast.

The movie weaves together several storylines, with the most focal being on a group of Jewish Americans known as the “Basterds.” Led by Lieutenant Aldo Raine, their goal is simple — kill as many Nazis as they possibly can. We also get to know Shosanna, a young Jewish woman who runs away from home after being targeted by an SS officer named Colonel Hans Landa.

Despite the dark time in history, Inglorious Basterds is actually very humorous while also blending in action and suspense. The cast, of course, is outstanding, and the way the story comes together in the end is totally satisfying. There’s really no movie out there like this one, making it an unforgettable watch. Christoph Waltz won an Academy Award for his performance as Hans Landa.
