Everything we know so far about Wednesday season 2 release, cast, production timeline, and so much more.

When Wednesday debuted in the fall of 2022, no one quite expected the show to take off in the way that it did. After its debut on Nov. 23, 2022, the series quickly shot to the top of Netflix’s Top 10 leaderboard across dozens of countries with Netflix touting that more than 50 million households watched 341.23 million hours of the show during its first week on the platform.

As the weeks went by, the show gained even more momentum becoming an instant hit for Netflix and taking Jenna Ortega’s career to a whole other level of stardom. Wednesday season 2 latest news

For a while after the release of season 1, we hadn’t heard much about Wednesday season 2, but that all started to change once Netflix officially renewed the show for season 2 in January 2023. In the months that have followed the show’s renewal, there has been a lot of news coming out about plans for the second season including changes to the show’s direction.

We shared the latest news about Wednesday season 2 below:

  • Following delayed caused by the actors’ and writers’ strikes of 2023, filming on Wednesday season 2 will begin in Spring 2024 roughly around April 2024.
  • Filming on season 2 is expected to last for roughly six months
  • While season 1 of Wednesday was filmed in Romania, season 2 will be filmed in Ireland.
  • Tim Burton has confirmed he will be involved in the upcoming second season of the show. It’s unclear how heavily he’ll be involved in the creative process, but we imagine Burton will be very hands on.
  • During the TUDUM Global Event on June 17, the cast reacted to some of the biggest fan theories including one that they were able to confirm was true: season 2 will introduce a new member of the Addams Family!
  • Wednesday season 2 is happening as season 2 was ordered by Netflix in January 2023.
  • Not only will Jenna Ortega be returning to reprise her role as Wednesday Addams in the second season, but Ortega will also be a producer on season 2 allowing her to have more say in the creative direction of her character and the show.
  • If fans were hoping for a darker take on the Addams Family, it sounds like they’ll be getting their wish! Jenna Ortega has revealed season 2 will lean more into the horror elements of the show.
  • Season 1 actor Percy Hynes White is reported to have been cut from the season 2 cast following sexual assault allegations.

Wednesday season 2 is happening

Wednesday season 2 is indeed happening! After breaking records and becoming a global hit, it was a no-brainer for Netflix to renew the series. Although it took Netflix longer than some expected to order the show’s second season, an official renewal was announced on Jan. 6, 2023, via Twitter as Netflix confirmed season 2 was happening!

Watching the Wednesday renewal announcement below:

Wednesday season 2 still doesn’t have a release date

As of January 2024, no release date for Wednesday season 2 has been announced and it’s likely fans will have to wait some time before Netflix reveals when the second season of the Jenna Ortega-led drama will arrive.

Season 2 was ordered by Netflix in January 2023 and the plan seemed to be for the show to begin production sometime this fall. Wednesday is among the many shows that have been affected by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The show’s first setback came when the writers’ strike began on May 2, 2023, causing production to pause on the show as writers were unable to continue working on scripts.

On July 13, the actors began their strike after also failing to reach a new deal with the studios. This means that not only could actors not work on projects, but they’re also unable to provide any updates or promote shows.

The good news is that the WGA strike ended in September 2023 which allowed Netflix to resume work on the show’s second season, and filming will finally be able to begin in early 2024 after the actors’ union inked a new deal in November 2023.

Wednesday season 2 will begin filming in early 2024

In an interview with FOX SPORTS during the Spanish Grand Prix, Wednesday star Catherine Zeta-Jones revealed that the plan was to begin filming in Fall 2023. Although no specific month or date was provided, many speculated the plan was to follow a production schedule to the show’s first season which entered production in September.

Due to the WGA and SAG strikes, production on most shows has been delayed including Wednesday as filming has yet to begin due to the strikes. Now that the strikes are behind us, Netflix is getting back to work and Wednesday will be among the many Netflix shows that finally begin filming again in 2024.

Filming on the show’s first season began in September 2021 and wrapped around March 2022 before debuting in November. This means it took roughly seven months to film the show and another eight months before the show arrived in November. Should production on Wednesday season 2 begin in April 2024 as hinted at in reports and follow a similar 15-month production timeline, it’s highly likely we won’t see the show return until sometime in 2025.

Netflix is moving Wednesday’s production from Romania to Ireland

In a surprising move, Netflix is moving production of its most popular new series after just one season. After filming season 1 of Wednesday across Romania, Deadline reports Netflix is moving production to Ireland. No information is known about where exactly Netflix will film, but the move to a new location seems to suggest perhaps the story will move to a new backdrop in season 2.

When season 1 ended, Wednesday was leaving Nevermore Academy after saving the day with a threatening text message sent to her from a mystery individual. This seemed to tee up the mystery for season 2, but it might also help the show with the move to a new filming location.

Nothing has been confirmed about the storylines for season 2, so it’s possible the change in location could allow the show to change the setting of the show.

Wednesday season 2 cast

Currently, the only actor who has been confirmed for Wednesday season 2 is Jenna Ortega, which isn’t surprising given Ortega plays the title character on the show. It’s also been hinted at heavily that Catherine Zeta-Jones will be back as Morticia Addams as Zeta-Jones has openly discussed season 2 plans which hint at her involvement.

Emma Myers has also hinted that she’ll be coming back for season 2 telling Collider, that she’s looking forward to revisiting the role again:

"“I am very excited to get back into it. I can’t wait to see my friends and jump back into it. It’s very strange because I’ve not done a role and then come back to do it. It’s kind of weird because you feel like you finished it, but going back into it, you’ve got to remember what you did.”"

As for the rest of the season 2 cast? In addition to Jenna Ortega and Catherine Zeta-Jones, here is a look at every season 1 cast member who might return for season 2:

  • Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams
  • Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Addams
  • Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams
  • Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley Addams
  • Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester
  • Gwendoline Christie as Principal Larissa Weems
  • Jamie McShane as Sheriff Galpin
  • Hunter Doohan as Tyler Galpin
  • Emma Myers as Enid Sinclair
  • Joy Sunday as Bianca Barclay

Jenna Ortega quit Scream 7 because of Wednesday

After playing Ortega Tara Carpenter in 2022’s Scream and 2023’s Scream VI, it was expected that Ortega would be coming back for the next entry in the franchise. All signs pointed toward Ortega returning for the next Scream movie but her busy schedule forced her to walk away from the movie.

In a report from Deadline, it was revealed that Ortega’s exit from the Scream film was discussed prior to the actors’ strike due to her busy schedule. With no script ready for Scream 7 and Ortega needing to head to Ireland to film Wednesday for several months, Ortega chose to walk away from the Scream franchise in order to focus her attention on Wednesday.

Percy Hynes White isn’t expected to return for Wednesday season 2

According to reports out of Daily Mail, Percy Hynes White is reported to have been cut from the cast of Wednesday and will not be returning as Xavier Thorpe in Wednesday season 2. As Daily Mail reports, White has been cut from the cast following sexual assault allegations and is not expected to be returning next season.

“For Netflix to drop him from the show is a disgrace. It was just false rumors. It’s just not right,” one source told Daily Mail addressing the rumor.

At this time, Netflix has yet to comment on the reports that Hines has been cut from the cast and it’s unlikely the network will address the reports until after the actors’ strike ends. Still, it does seem that we won’t be seeing Xavier back as there is no mention of the character’s return on the official Netflix page.

There are rumors Wednesday season 2 will be adding a new love interest for Wednesday

There have been a lot of conflicting reports about what is to come in the romance department when Wednesday season 2 arrives on Netflix.

Jenna Ortega revealed during Variety’s Actors and Actors series that the show was "ditching any romantic love interest for Wednesday, which is really great. This seemed to suggest that the show would be dropping the love triangle created between her character Wednesday and Percy Hynes White and Hunter Doohan’s characters, Tyler and Xaiver —  a love triangle Ortega has referred to in the past as making no sense for her character.

However, What's On Netflix reports the show is looking to introduce a new love interest for Wednesday in the upcoming season. In a tweet shared on Jan. 25, What's On Netflix reported that the show will introduce a new character named Bruno in season 2 who will be a love interest for Ortega's title character.

Given Ortega's initial remarks about the show ditching any romantic love interests came before production began on season 2, it is possible that there was a change in this direction. It's also possible that the report from What's On Netflix could be inaccurate and prove to be nothing more than a rumor.

What we do know at this time is Netflix has not officially confirmed whether or not Percy Hynes White and Hunter Doohan will return for season 2. Nor has it announced any new cast additions.

Gwendoline Christie has hinted that she’ll be back for Wednesday season 2

The status of Gwendoline Christie’s role in Wednesday season 2 remains a major source of curiosity among audiences, but Christie seems optimistic we haven’t seen the last of Principal Larissa Weems!

In an interview with Digital SpyChristie reminded audiences that we never saw her character put in the ground and that cheating death is most definitely not out of the question for the character:

"“We haven’t seen her put in the ground, have we? I feel like Larissa Weems would not really be prepared to entertain or be dominated by anything as commonplace as death.”"

If television has taught us anything, it’s that in a supernatural series such as Wednesday, there are always ways for characters to evade death even if their “death” occurs on-camera. Plus, Weems was such a fun character and we can’t imagine the show letting go of such an amazing character that easily.

How many episodes are expected to be in Wednesday season 2

When announcing Wednesday season 2’s renewal, Netflix did not provide much information about the plans for the show’s second season; however, the running assumption is that the second season of Wednesday will consist of eight to ten episodes which is the standard episode order for Netflix dramas. Given season 1 consisted of eight episodes, it seems likely season 2 will also be eight episodes in length.

Wednesday season 2 might feature more of Catherine Zeta-Jones

There was a lot to love about Wednesday‘s first season, but one qualm some viewers had was that the first season didn’t feature enough screen time from the broader Addams family. Luckily it seems that might change in season 2 as there are reports Catherine Zeta-Jones will have a larger role as Morticia Addams in season 2!

In an interview with VarietyWednesday costume designer Colleen Atwood seemed to suggest we’ll see more of Morticia next season when she revealed that we’re going to see the character get a lot of looks in season 2:

"“In season 2 she’ll have a lot of looks, so it will be really fun to see what Morticia does when she’s out of the dress and into around-the-house looks.”"

Considering the show is preparing multiple looks for Morticia, one would assume there is a good chance that we’re going to get to see more of the character in season 2 which would be a major win for the show. Morticia and Wednesday have such a unique relationship and it’d be great to get to dive further into their dynamic in season 2. Plus, we’d kill for more scenes between Zeta-Jones and Ortega!

Wednesday season 2 could be TV-MA

The first season of Wednesday was rated TV-14 which means the show might not be suitable for children under 14. This rating was given to the show due to fear, language, and violence, incorporated across the show’s eight episodes. One would assume the creative team will look to maintain that rating in season 2; however, there is a chance the show’s age rating could change with season 2.

Jenna Ortega has teased that the show’s second season will look to ditch the show’s romantic elements and lean further into the horror genre. As she told Elle Fanning during Variety’s Actors and Actors series (which you can watch below):

"“We’ve decided we want to lean into the horror aspect of the show a little bit more. Because it is so lighthearted, and a show like this with vampires and werewolves and superpowers, you don’t want to take yourself too seriously.”"

Depending on how many changes come with the show’s shift to leaning more into the horror elements, there is a chance the show’s rating could go to TV-MA in season 2 which means the programs are intended to be viewed by mature, adult audiences and may be unsuitable for children under 17. However, it’s also possible the show will find a way to lean into horror while also maintaining its more teen-friendly TV-14 rating.

What we do know at this time is Netflix has not officially confirmed whether or not Percy Hynes White and Hunter Doohan will return for season 2.

Wednesday season 2 will introduce a new member of the Addams Family

The fan theories are true! Season 2 of Wednesday is going to introduce a new member of the Addams Family previously not seen in the show’s first season! It’s not yet known who the new character might be but many are excited at the potential of seeing Cousin Itt or Grandmama.

Wednesday Emmy nominations

It’s not often that a supernatural series such as Wednesday is able to break through at the Emmys, but the voters apparently also couldn’t get enough of Netflix’s hit series! When the nominations for the 75th Emmy Awards were announced, Wednesday ended up picking up a total of 12 Emmy nominations!

Of course, the highlight of the nominations was seeing Jenna Ortega nominated for her performance in the Lead Actress in a Comedy category and the show landing a nomination in the Outstanding Comedy race. Here’s a breakdown of every Emmy nomination Wednesday received:

SAG banned Wednesday Halloween costumes

In one of the most unexpected developments, SAG-AFTRA has banned its members from donning costumes inspired by popular. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter,  the union is “prohibiting actors from dressing up as popular characters from struck content and then posting the images on social media.”

This means actors are banned from wearing costumes inspired by Wednesday, including Wednesday Addams costumes which were set to be among the year’s most popular costumes.

After facing backlash from many including high-profile SAG-AFTRA members, the union did not back down clarifying that actors’ kids were free to dress as whatever they’d like:

"“SAG-AFTRA issued Halloween guidance in response to questions from content creators and members about how to support the strike during this festive season. This was meant to help them avoid promoting struck work, and it is the latest in a series of guidelines we have issued. It does not apply to anyone’s kids.”"
