6. The Governor

There are many reasons to dislike The Governor. He was a liar and a murderer. He ordered Merle to beat Glenn, and he threatened Maggie.

When Merle and Daryl reunited he tried to have them fight each other to the death. He tried to kill Michonne multiple times. He was going to kill them. The Governor attacked the prison multiple times. But throughout all of it and despite all the things he did and all the people that he killed, it might have been possible for the survivors to find a way to work together if he hadn’t killed Hershel.

Killing Hershel was really the last straw as far as the fans were concerned. They could get over his plans to kill Rick and Michonne and the others. Fans could forgive him for attacking the prison in season 3. But that season 4 attack where he kidnapped Hershel and Michonne and then beheaded Hershel when Rick wouldn’t give up the prison made him a character that fans would dislike forever.

Hershel was one of the most beloved characters on The Walking Dead, and still is judging by how affected people were by Scott Wilson’s last appearance on the show as Hershel in season 9’s “What Comes After”.

Being responsible for the brutal murder of a beloved character is always going to put you in the most polarizing Hall Of Fame. Always. Seeing Michonne run The Governor through with her katana was an extremely satisfying moment for fans because he totally deserved that and much more.
