1. Lori Grimes

Was there any real doubt about who the most polarizing character on The Walking Dead would be? Lori Grimes did try to protect her son in the terrifying and dangerous post-apocalypse world. And she did give her life in a terrible way so that Judith could live and those two things definitely count in her favor.

Overall, Lori was just a mess of moralizations and rationalizations. Fans could probably forgive her for striking up a relationship with Shane when she thought Rick was dead because she really did think he was dead.

But, even after Rick came back she wouldn’t let go of Shane. Shane was getting ready to leave the group and go off on his own which is exactly what should have happened. But Lori told Shane to stay with the group. She had to know that having Shane and Rick around each other was a powder keg that was going to explode eventually. But she didn’t trust Rick and wanted Shane to stay as a backup in case she needed someone else to keep her and her children safe. She also didn’t keep a very close eye on Carl despite constantly saying that Carl was the most important thing to her.

Lori’s death was sad because of the circumstances of her death. Her death gave her nobility that never had in life. Lori Grimes was a very flawed character, and while she and Rick might have been a good match in the world before the apocalypse world, they were a terrible match after the apocalypse. Lori’s death traumatized Rick, but in the end, he was probably better off without her.
