21. Lizzie

Lizzie wasn’t weak, unlike the first few entries on this list. Lizzie was so mentally damaged that she killed her own sister and was about to kill Judith. Her inability to recognize the walkers as dangerous put everyone in danger. And fans were horrified when she killed Mika hoping to prove to Carol that walkers weren’t dangerous. The tragedy of Lizzie’s mental instability wasn’t lost on viewers, but it wasn’t possible to feel conflicted about the character that was so unstable that she thought nothing of killing her sister in cold blood or killing a small child.

Lizzie was also partially responsible for the fall of the prison fences because she had been leaving out rats and other small animals as food for the walkers to draw them to the prison. The moment when Carol knew that she had to kill Lizzie because Lizzie couldn’t be around other humans or she would kill them was a heartbreaking one for fans watching “The Grove”. And fans hated Lizzie for putting Carol, who had a lost a daughter about Lizzie’s age, in the position of having to kill a child because she was not fit to live in the apocalypse world.

Like so many of the other characters who end up on this list Lizzie’s story is a mix of tragedy, circumstance, and character flaws that combine to make the character truly polarizing in The Walking Dead world. Because Lizzie was mentally unable to process what the walkers are, she always would have been dangerous to the living if she had been allowed to live. Carol did the right thing, but it scarred her forever and Carol’s devoted fans dislike Lizzie for killing her sister and for putting Carol in such a terrible position.
