19. Pete Anderson

The Anderson family definitely dominates the list of most polarizing characters on The Walking Dead.

Pete’s days were numbered on The Walking Dead as soon as Rick met Jessie. While Rick would never kill a man without cause, Pete gave him plenty of cause. Carol almost took Pete out when he threatened her because there was no way that Carol was going to let a man like Ed threaten her again. Even though Rick did fight with Pete in an epic fashion, he refrained from killing him until the night when the community was voting on whether or not to kick Rick out.

Rick’s fight with Pete was the last straw for the community which already was on edge about Rick, who certainly wasn’t acting in the most stable or responsible way. The tension that was building between Rick and Pete after Rick warned Pete about abusing his family again erupted in a massive fight that ended up with Rick in isolation. Deanna called a community meeting and the community was on the verge of kicking Rick out when a drunken Pete stumbled into the community meeting and accidentally killed Reg with Michonne’s katana.

Even though Pete was the community’s only doctor, his medical knowledge wasn’t enough to redeem him. Not everyone in the apocalypse world is worth saving, and not too many people were crying over Pete Anderson’s death. Pete’s death scene is memorable because just as Rick was killing Pete Daryl showed up after being out on a run and he had Morgan with him.
