Star Trek: Prodigy will not only be canceled but will also be removed entirely from the Paramount+ and Nickelodeon platforms.

In an unexpected development that has left the Star Trek fandom in a state of disbelief, Variety reports today that the animated series, Star Trek: Prodigy, will not only be canceled ahead of its previously announced second season but will also be removed entirely from the Paramount+ and Nickelodeon platforms.

According to the Variety report:

"“The Game, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, Star Trek: Prodigy, and Queen of the Universe have all been canceled at Paramount+. Additionally, all four shows are set to vanish from the streaming service within the next few days.”"

According to TrekCore.com, a Paramount+ spokesperson confirmed the abrupt conclusion of these shows’ runs, expressing gratitude to the “tremendously talented cast and crew” and their “passionate work and dedication,” while extending best wishes for their future endeavors.

The swift and sudden removal of Star Trek: Prodigy and the other Paramount+ shows marks a continuation of the recent trend of significant streaming library extractions, reminiscent of the high-profile removals previously seen on Max (formerly HBO Max), which all started after the unprecedented cancellation of the Batgirl movie.

Star Trek: Prodigy ran its first season over two years, with 10 episodes launching in the fall of 2021 and another 10 in late 2022. The second 20-episode season was slated to debut on Paramount+ in late 2023, with two sets of ten episodes each planned for late 2024.

The abrupt cancellation of Star Trek: Prodigy, the Star Trek universe’s inaugural animated kids’ show, is particularly startling. Despite receiving a green light for a second season back in 2021, the show will not return to either Paramount+ or Nickelodeon. An insider reports that the show’s team will finish post-production on Season 2 and CBS Studios will then have the liberty to shop it to other outlets.

As we anticipate further updates on this shocking development, it seems the final frontier of the Star Trek universe just became a bit more elusive.
