DC: Superman loses his super-hearing as Lex Luthor is attacked

Lex Luthor is attacked and powerless in the newest issue of DC Comics’ Superman. 

The Dawn of DC has already proven that things are changing within DC Comics. The changes were going to affect everyone. Already, Batman has lost his hand, the Titans are the premiere super-team in the world, and Catwoman could become the premiere hero of Gotham City.

Of course, Superman wouldn’t be left out of this. In Superman by Joshua Williamson, he found an unlikely partner in Lex Luthor.

The series is only five issues in and the Man of Steel and Lex Luthor have already protected Metropolis from being overrun by an army of Parasites. In issue No. 5, new villains Mr. Graft and Dr. Pharm enhanced Banshee’s powers. During her fight with Superman, she temporarily broke Supes’ enhanced hearing. While his super-sense was down, Luthor was attacked and stabbed in prison. This was Mr. Graft and Dr. Pharm’s plan. With Superman’s hearing stunted, he couldn’t hear Luthor being attacked.

Mr. Graft and Dr. Pharm may be two of the freshest DC Comics villains, but they’re not new in DC’s continuity. According to Lex Luthor, they’re among the first Metropolis villains he fought. They were continuously defeated by Luthor before Superman became a superhero. It was so long ago that Lex Luthor still had long hair. After years of hiding, Mr. Graft and Dr. Pharm have returned and are continuing their experiments. Among the people they’ve been working on is another of Supes’ enemies, Bizarro. It can’t be a coincidence that they’ve experimented on Superman villains.

If this writer had to guess, the final step could be to use Bizarro’s body to reign terror on Metropolis. Using his body on top of the data they’ve collected will push Superman’s power and Luthor’s intelligence to the limit. We’ll have to wait and see what’s next for Mr. Graft and Dr. Pharm. Also, what did they mean by Project Chain being a skeleton in Luthor’s closet? Is this connected to Marilyn Moonlight? Stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow to find out.
