The first episode of Secret Invasion ends on a saddening note. After being in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over a decade, Maria Hill (played by Cobie Smulders) is killed. Gravik, the Skrulls’ terrorist leader, was the one who got the kill. All Nick Fury could do was watch as one of the few people he trusts dies. If you’re like this writer, you kept waiting for Maria Hill to change into a Skrull. It didn’t happen. It seems that Maria Hill is really dead. Although, how many MCU characters did we assume were dead only to come back later?

The premiere of the Disney Plus series set the stage for the rest of the season. Before the opening credits start rolling, viewers discover that Everett Ross is a Skrull. However, it’s not that simple. Later in the show, fans see humans held in status. That means Ross may not have been a Skrull this entire time. Who knows when he was replaced? The question “Who you can trust”  will be wondered throughout the series.

Episode 2 should show Nick Fury as we’ve never seen him. He’s going to be emotional. Sure, we’ve seen him sad. For example, the death of Phil Coulson in The Avengers was the first time Fury was sorrowful on camera. Things will be different here. Not only was Maria Hill someone he trusted, Fury is going to blame himself. Being helpless isn’t something he’s used to feeling. It’s going to make him wonder if he has what it takes to continue the job.
