4. Hated Demon Slayer characters: Gyokko

Gyokko has to be one of the most annoying Upper-Rank demons there is simply because he is definitely full of himself. He prides himself in his creations (which are subpar at best) and uses what he creates to smite anyone in his way. Should the person not appreciate his artwork, they would have hell to pay.

Muichiro Tokito certainly knows a thing or two about this.

We first meet Gyokko during the first episode of the Swordsmith Village Arc. His introduction doesn’t exactly put him in a favorable light, as even Muzan is greatly annoyed by this talkative fellow and his inability to see outside of anything of himself and his art.

We then watch how Gyokko engages in battle and we see that this demon goes so far as to slash the face of Hotaru, a mere bystander, to get the attention of Muichiro. And as if that weren’t enough, Gyokko also impaled an innocent kid, nearly killed another villager, and almost drowned Muichiro all in one fight. This guy’s limit when it comes to winning a battle knows no bounds!

Another thing that certainly doesn’t help Gyokko’s case is, in some ways, he’s a weak demon. Sure, he put Muichiro through hell and back and murdered a handful amount of villagers, but for him to be easily defeated by the youngest Hashira there is, we’re kind of disappointed. (How do you live over 100 years and get taken out by a 14-year-old kid? Seriously!)

What would make us hate Gyokko less? Unfortunately for Gyokko, Muichiro is nothing like Tanjiro and doesn’t care for the sob stories of demons, so it’s hard to really know any of Gyokko’s redeeming qualities.

Perhaps if we heard how the Upper-Rank demon wounded up Muzan’s slave, we would have a soft spot, as we know demons often lived somewhat of a sad life prior to turning into a demon. Maybe his art was rejected too frequently as a human being. Or maybe the only way he could provide for his family was through art. But we guess we’ll never know why he’s so obnoxious with his art and therefore, have no sympathy to give.
