Despite him being in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for so long, there’s still a lot we don’t know about Nick Fury. Secret Invasion Episode 2 just revealed one major thing about him.

Aside from a few Marvel Cinematic Universe characters like Spider-Man, secret identities are essentially non-existent, meaning that in-universe, mostly everything about them is readily available. Out-of-universe, even those characters have their personal lives shown to the audience and explored in their solo projects and crossover films.

One of the only characters that has not happened for is Nick Fury – until now. While we have gotten glimpses into the character’s past over the years, Fury’s personal life has largely remained a mystery which makes sense since he, a career spy, tends to keep information close to the vest. The ending of the most recent episode of Secret Invasion changed that.

In Episode 2 of the Disney Plus series, titled “Promises,” Fury gets put through the wringer. After being fired by Rhodey on behalf of President Ritson and the United States due to the events that occurred in Moscow at the end of episode 1, including the death of Maria Hill, he goes to a storage facility where he keeps a car. We see him drive for a while before arriving at an extravagant-looking house where we see a Skrull woman inside chopping vegetables.

He enters the house using a key and heads to the kitchen, where the woman is now in human form. When she asks him if he’s “forgetting something,” he heads back to the living room, picks up a wedding ring from a tray, and returns, placing it on his finger. The two kiss and embrace each other as the screen fades to the credits while “Try a Little Tenderness” by Otis Redding plays in the background.

Who is Fury’s Wife in Secret Invasion?

Fury’s wife, Varra, or Priscilla Fury, is one of the many Skrull refugees that made their way to Earth and helped Fury during the ‘90s and onward. She appears during the opening flashback scene and is the one that introduces Fury to Gravik, saying that the young Skrull could be an asset to them in the future.

Surprisingly, while this is the first time we’ve seen Fury’s wife, this actually isn’t the first time she received mention in the franchise. The first time she was alluded to was in Captain America: The Winter Soldier when Fury shows up at Steve Roger’s apartment after narrowly escaping HYDRA agents that attempted to assassinate him.

When Steve arrives to find him in his place, Fury tells him that his wife kicked him out. Steve says that he didn’t know Fury was married, to which Fury replies that there is a lot about him that Steve doesn’t know. Although getting kicked out is just the excuse he gives just in case anyone was listening to their conversation, it’s still a subtle nod to the fact that he was married.

In the comics, Varra is a Kree-Skrull hybrid that has only appeared in 2 issues, New Avengers Vol 4 #4 and Empyre: Aftermath Avengers #1, so it’s likely that the show just borrowed the name and nothing else, which means that the show has some freedom about the route they take with the character.

She can be seen more prominently in some of the trailers for the series, so there’s a guarantee that we’ll see more of her in action in the upcoming episodes.
