Marvel just confirmed we’ve seen the last of Thor (for now)

Thor is a fixture of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but a new Marvel poster may have solidified the fact that we’ve seen the last of him for now.

Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder first made his hammer-smashing way onto screens in 2011’s Thor. Since then, Thor has become a staple of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, battling dark elves, alien invasions, and even his own brother. He also survived Thanos’ snap and the final battle with the Mad Titan, with his film franchise being one of the few aspects from the original MCU to get carried over into Phase Four.

We last saw him wield the hammer alongside Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster in Thor: Love and Thunder last year, but there haven’t been any updates as to when he could be back. Unfortunately, it looks like we won’t be seeing him any time soon.

The God of Thunder was a prominent figure on Disney Plus’ MCU banner, but he has since been removed. While that’s obviously shocking on a surface level given he’s one of the most prominent Avengers, it also suggests we’ve seen the last of him (at least for now).

Thor removed from MCU Banner on Disney Plus

The Marvel Studios banner has been updated on Disney Plus to reflect the more current state of the MCU (and it can be seen here). As a result, heroes who have either starred in their own show recently or are set to (like She-Hulk Loki and Secret Invasion‘s Nick Fury) appear prominently. It also  caused some conversations because it removed the two remaining original Avengers: Black Widow and Thor.

Natasha Romanoff’s Black Widow died in Avengers: Endgame but with her solo film being a big part of Phase Four, it was understandable that she was on the banner. Her removal from it (and replacement with sister Yelena Belova) makes sense as the character won’t be a part of Phase Five or the MCU going forward.

Thor, on the other hand, is very much alive, so his removal from the poster has raised some suspicions. This likely confirms that the God of Thunder won’t be a part of Phase Five (which may not be too surprising since none of the upcoming titles were expected to feature him). However, it has made fans concerned that it will be a long time until we see him again (or that we could have seen the last of him).

The new banner might be all about highlighting the MCU in its current form in Phase Five, but there are also a number of Phase Four characters that remain, such as Shang-Chi, Scarlet Witch, and Shuri’s Black Panther. Does this mean these characters could be a part of Phase Five, too? Or perhaps it’s just appreciating all of the current Phase Four and Phase Five heroes. If that was the case, though, why was Thor not kept on the updated banner since Love and Thunder was a part of Phase Four?

Taking that into account, it’s unlikely that Thor will return in the immediate future of the MCU. However, it’s important to remember that Love and Thunder did set up a sequel and its end credits concluded with “Thor will return”. It might not be in Phase Five, but we should expect to see him back someday. Hey, the Avengers will need all the help they can get when Avengers: The Kang Dynasty rolls around.
