2. Anthony Mackie

Anthony Mackie’s journey to becoming Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was remarkable. Mackie brilliantly captured the complexities of Sam’s character as he grappled with the weight of taking on the mantle of Captain America. He conveyed the depth of Sam’s internal conflicts, his doubts, and the societal pressures he faced as a Black man assuming such a prominent and historically significant role.

Sam Wilson’s ascension to the Captain America mantle was a powerful and important moment in the MCU. It represented a significant step towards representation and inclusivity in the superhero genre.

While there might have been a desire to see Bucky Barnes take up the shield, Sam Wilson’s journey was ultimately more fitting. It showcased his personal growth, resilience, and the belief that heroism is not defined solely by physical strength but also by character and heart.

Anthony Mackie’s portrayal of Sam Wilson as Captain America was a shining example of why he was the best pick to pass the shield on to. He embodied the spirit and ideals of Captain America while bringing his own unique perspective and experiences to the role, leaving a lasting impact on both the character and the audience.

Given that Mackie has only just come into the Captain America role, it’s going to be interesting to further explore his take on the character in the MCU. Captain America: Brave New World could be a true turning point for the character. Still, it’s unlikely we’ll be updating this ranking as there is no denying that the all-time greatest Captain America performance comes from a man who was no stranger to superhero franchises when cast as Steve Rogers.
