The God of Thunder changes his look and upgrades Mjolnir in Marvel Comics Thor Annual No. 1. He may have also doomed himself in the process as well.

Thor Annual No. 1 showed All-Father Thor getting over his insecurities while fighting an enhanced M.O.D.O.K. While fighting him, the All-Father realized that doing things like his father (Odin) wouldn’t work. He wasn’t Odin and rules differently. Without this new way of thinking, M.O.D.O.K. would have defeated Odinson and held control over the Ten Realms. This advanced thought process carried over to a short story at the end of the issue and motivated the King of Asgard to change his look.

Sif (who’s taken over for Heimdall) sees Thor in his old clothing. He says that he wants the beings of the Ten Realms to realize that, while he’s the king of Asgard, he’s still the same Thor he’s always been. As a Marvel Comics fan, it was nice to see him in his old costume. It felt like he was himself for the first time since Original Sin back in 2014. Considering everything he’s been through, a change was needed. It may not seem like much, but sometimes a change in clothes helps.

It wasn’t just his clothes. The All-Father repaired Mjolnir as well. It no longer has the gold his sister Angela used to put his hammer back together (Thor No. 24 by Donny Cates). Also, according to Sif, Mjolnir didn’t just look new. The All-Power made it stronger than ever. After seeing that, Sif asked if it was wise for the All-Father to use that power so freely. The All-Father believes it was more than okay to do so. However, the final panel may prove him wrong.

The last page shows Thor holding two hammers and one of them looks like Mjolnir from the Ultimate Universe. That’s the good news. The bad news is he’s covered in cuts and standing in a puddle of his blood. Was this caused by the All-Father using his new powers carelessly? Did he get Mjolnir from the Ultimate Universe because of the Maker’s shenanigans (read Ultimate Invasion No. 1 for more on that)? Readers will have to wait until Immortal Thor by Al Ewing (debuting on August 23, 2023) to get the answers to all of these questions.
