What scares Joker more than anything in DC Comics? It’s a life without Batman and not getting credit for his crimes.

DC Comics’ recent event Knight Terrors is all about fear. A villain named Insomnia is looking for something called the Nightmare Stone. To get it, he had to neutralize anyone who could stop him. He did so by putting everyone in the world to sleep. While unconscious, they’re experiencing their worst nightmare. For example, Batman is a child again and reliving the death of his parents in Crime Alley.

Over the next two months, DC Comics fans will be able to see what scares characters like Superman, Wonder Woman, Punchline, and more in one-shot comics. One of the first issues involved the Clown Prince of Crime, the Joker. Finding out what scares him makes sense when you think about who he is, but it’s also kind of funny.

At the beginning of DC Comics Knight Terrors: The Joker the Clown Prince of Crime and his henchmen are fighting Batman on a roof. The Dark Knight goes to attack Joker and dies in the silliest way possible. He slips, hits his face on the floor, and slides off the building. Joker doesn’t trip him and it wasn’t because of a trap one of his goons sets. This was a calamitous accident. Of course, this infuriates the Clown Prince of Crime. He doesn’t want Batman dead. He wants to play this sick game of mayhem and crime forever.

Joker’s nightmare doesn’t end there. From then on, all of his crimes are easy. Without a challenge and Batman being dead, Joker loses his passion for committing crimes. To him, everything seemed mundane. He doesn’t just stop being a major threat to Gotham City. Joker gets a full-time job working at (of all places) Wayne Enterprises.

Joker continues to try and make the best out of his situation by killing some of his coworkers, but he’s not getting credit for the kills. This sends him into a downward spiral of being normal. He goes out with his coworkers, does karaoke, and gets promotions. Then, out of nowhere, there are Batman sightings. You’d think that would rejuvenate the Clown Prince of Crime. He can go back to his former life. Instead, he goes home and watches Real Housewives of Metropolis. Meanwhile, Batman’s corpse is hanging in the closet behind him.

In short, the Joker’s worst nightmare is being normal in a world without Batman and getting credit for his crimes. As this writer said earlier, it makes sense. Stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow to find out what terrifies people like Black Adam, Harley Quinn, and Punchline.
