6. What If…?
Due to it being an anthology series, What If…? boasts the largest cast of any MCU show. While some characters, like Black Widow and Drax, are voiced by different actors than their live-action versions, Samuel L. Jackson returns to voice Nick Fury in the series, and frankly, no one else could do it justice.
The episode he appears in, “What If…The World Lost Its Mightiest Heroes?” drops Fury into the middle of a murder mystery where each of the potential candidates for the Avengers is getting picked off one by one.
Jackson is no stranger to animated voice work, so it’s no surprise that he gives one of the better performances of the returning cast members in the series. There’s a point in the episode where he gets to voice Loki, who is pretending to be Fury, and you can tell that Jackson was having an enjoyable time doing it.
While it doesn’t quite live up to its potential, the show has a lot of positives. The animation style is amazing, the previously-mentioned cast of talented actors does a solid job, and there are shots that rival the live-action movies in cinematography. If only it could lean more into the premise of showing wildly different alternate universes outside of the main MCU, it would be a lot closer to perfect.
