17. Watchmen
Arguably the best superhero show to date is Watchmen, created by the incredibly talented Damon Lindelof and inspired by the comic book of the same name. The limited series debuted in 2019 and features a fantastic cast, including Regina King as Angela Abar/Sister Night, Jeremy Irons as Adrian Veidt/Ozymandias, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Calvin Abar/Dr. Manhattan, Tim Blake Nelson as Wade Tillman/Looking Glass, Don Johnson as Judd Crawford, and others.
Watchmen explores themes of power, justice, racism, and humanity, following masked vigilantes in an alternate reality. The series has been applauded for its depiction of social and political issues, including white supremacy and police brutality, and is truly a timeless story.
The series transcended the superhero genre and was critically acclaimed when it came out, earning 11 Emmy awards including the award for Outstanding Limited Series.
16. High Maintenance
Created by Ben Sinclair and Katja Blichfeld, High Maintenance is a defining TV show in weed culture. The dramedy series debuted on HBO in 2016 after running multiple seasons on Vimeo and received critical acclaim. The show follows a weed dealer living in New York City, simply called The Guy, as he interacts with the different people he delivers to.
Rather than taking a focus on The Guy’s personal life, each episode tells the story of his clients, from actors buying weed in character, to a group of swingers, to a man who collects La Croix seltzer cans, and more interesting people. Though the series is primarily lighthearted, it also delves into deeper topics like loss, love, and friendship. Some episodes certainly sit with you longer than others.
High Maintenance is one of my favorite series to re-watch.
